| Title: ABLE TO CHOOSE Interview on 501c3Cast! |
| Description The Able to Choose campaign has been featured on the 501c3Cast (http://www.501c3cast.com), a popular podcast for nonprofit professionals, volunteers, and do-gooders to share information and resources to help them do their jobs better. The show’s founder and host, Corey Pudhorodsky, has been dubbed the “Terry Gross of the nonprofit podcasting world” by a growing following. Pudhorodsky featured the Able to Choose public awareness campaign along with other leaders in the disability advocacy community in a roundtable discussion that aired February 9, 2009. Participating in the interactive forum was Heidi Lawyer, executive director of the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities (VBPD). As the Commonwealth’s "Developmental Disabilities Planning Council," VBPD engages in outreach activities to promote community integration, person-centered practices, and self-determination for people with disabilities. Lawyer discussed the board's latest project, the Able to Choose campaign -- which is designed to raise awareness among all Virginians that individuals with disabilities of all types, can and do live successfully in communities of their own choice when individually appropriate services and supports are available to them. Also on the show was Jamie Trosclair, the executive director of the Arc of Virginia, which serves as the state chapter, and is affiliated with The Arc of the United States. Advocacy is a key component of the Arc of Virginia and she joined the show to talk about issues that affect people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities and their families. Additionally, Karen Tefelski, the executive director of vaACCSESS, participated in the informative interview. vaACCESS is an association of Virginia community service providers whose goal is to enhance the support of Virginians with disabilities so that to lead to maximum community involvement. Telfelski discussed during the interview her group’s initiatives to develop relationships and influence policy makers, funders and advocates through advocacy, education and training.
